About
As child I was fascinated by textures; as a textile artist I was drawn to colour and symmetry; as a printmaker I love the freedom of instinctive mark making to make bold statements. Using colour as a starting point, my inspiration is all around me, in the intimate landscape and architecture of our world, the contrast between surfaces and structures.
Currently I am working on large sheets of floor vinyl which reproduces many of the qualities of lino but is lighter to manipulate and move around. I use the plate as a surface to print large areas of colour and texture before making any marks. Each mark leads to the next and intuitively links with the colours and textures developing on the paper.
There is no formula, instead an exploration of the relationship between artist and the printing process. It is a collaborative process and the result is a series of unique monoprints influenced by but not dictated to by the artist.
I always start by building up layers of colour then start making marks and dividing up the printing plate into blocks of interrelating colour and texture. Printing layer upon layer of ink, often while still wet allows a degree of experimentation and surprise which is always exciting, sometimes challenging. The excitement for me is trying to instinctively interpret the resulting image produced to create a work which is dynamic and vibrant and will draw the viewer in.
